(asıl adı Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) 27 Ocak 1832’de İngiltere’de Cheshire’da doğdu. 1854 yılında Oxford Üniversitesi’nden matematik ve klasik edebiyat dallarında çok başarılı bir öğrenci olarak mezun oldu ve 1881 yılına kadar üniversitede matematik dersleri verdi.14 Ocak 1898 yılında İngiltere’de Guildford’da yaşama veda etti.
