Robert Oppenheimer, Kapitza’nın Cambridge’deki laboratuvarının ön cephesinde bir timsah resmi asılı olduğunu söyler. Bunun ne anlama geldiğini soranlara bunun bir bilim timsahı olduğunu, timsahın başını çeviremediğini ve tıpkı bilim gibi önüne geleni hırsla yiyip yutan sürekli ileri gitmek zorunda olan bir hayvan olduğu cevabını verdiğinden bahseder.
Bilimin doğası gereği böyle olduğu ve evcilleştirilemeyeceği ortadadır ancak bazen metodu sorgulamak gerekir. Kapitza’nın timsahı, günümüzde uyuşuk bir halde yoluna devam etmektedir. Dişsiz kalan bu timsah yediklerini sindirememekte, tadını alamamakta, besleyici ögelerinden de mahrum bırakılmaktadır.

Robert Oppenheimer mentions that there was a picture of a crocodile hanging on the front facade of Kapitza's laboratory in Cambridge. When asked what it meant, he explained that it was a crocodile of science, one whose head could not turn, and just like science, it is a creature that must continuously move forward, devouring everything in its path with relentless drive.
It is evident that science, by its very nature, is untamable, yet at times, one must question the method itself. Kapitza’s crocodile, once a formidable symbol, now slumbers sluggishly along its path. Toothless, it can no longer digest what it devours, cannot savor its taste, and is deprived of its nourishing essence.
The crocodile is emaciated.
