Nancy Spero

American artist and feminist Nancy Spero (1926–2009) became known for her long, papyrus-like scrolls that used totemic figures and mythological figures almost as a sort of language, and which later left the scrolls to be imprinted directly on the walls of the exhibiting galleries themselves. She confronted such issues as the Vietnam War and feminism—particularly the abuse of women, and women's positions in the art world. With photos and color reproductions throughout, this monograph examines Spero's final three decades of work. It includes an artist interview by Jo Anna Isaak, excerpts from the writings of Alice Jardine and the script of Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove that profoundly influenced Spero, and selections of the artist's own writings.
