This tribute to Abid Mian Lal Mian Syed—known professionally as A L Syed—explores the man and his photographic work, revealing his exceptional technical skill and artistic eye in 93 duotone reproductions that represent a career spanning 70 years and a treasure of Indian photographic heritage. Syed first gained a reputation as the favorite state photographer for the royal families of Palanpur in Gujarat India in the 1920s. He accompanied the Nawab of Palanpur in his travels around the country and from 1940 to 1975 lived with him in Bombay. With his Rolleicord camera ever near, Syed pursued an unlimited range of subjects, from wildlife and landscapes to film stars and day-to-day street life.
